Easy Bedroom Makeovers

Changing the look of your bedroom doesn’t have cost an arm and leg. A little creativity can go a long way, whether it's an afternoon project or just adding a few accessories.

Here's how to get started:

Get yourself several accessory pillows, for about $10 each or less, in completely new color. Creating a monochromatic look is as simple as getting several pillows in the same color but using different textures like silk or chenille. You can get a romantic feel by creating a layer of pillows with larger pillows in the back and smaller ones in the front. Want to make a big impact? Then a fresh coat of paint is one the most inexpensive way to go. Remember, you don't have to repaint your entire room; you can focus on a particular area that needs renovating. If you have older, more detailed closet doors you can paint the frame in a neutral color and the inset in a darker color for texture.

Painting furniture is also a great way to give the room new life. Try sponge-painting a chest or giving a cabinet a faux antique finish. Headboards can be expensive. Want to try something bold and different? Pick up a picket fence or ornate wrought iron fence at your local flea market. If you’re looking for an inexpensive decorating tip try bed skirts, the make your bed look both soft and sophisticated. They come in many different patterns, textures and colors. Soft and neutral in color is the most versatile and pretty. It should not be the focal point of your bed but simply the perfect finishing touch.

Window treatments are simpler than people think. Depending on the material used, swag curtains can be inexpensive and not too dramatic. It will really add a feminine touch to the room. You can do this with plant or bicycle hooks suspended from the ceiling. Or you can simply go with an inexpensive floral design for the top and blinds for your windows. Another look we love is a simple curtain rod with some trendy finials and simple ready made drapes. Ikea, Kmart, Target, JCPenney and Pottery Barn carry a large selection of all of these items.

Do you have a four-poster or canopy bed that needs a little life? Adorn the poles with fabric to achieve that “pond” affect, where the fabric appears to create a “pond” at the base. Getting this effect is easy, all you need is to add about an extra 20 inches before it’s cut. Don’t’ forget the perfect decorative item, candles. If you want a little sophistication and romance use white ones, but if you want to pull focus to dresser or night stand consider a group of colored candles. Group your candles in batches of 3, 5 or 9 – avoid even numbers since they tend to be boring. A great technique is to use various heights and place them as an altar on a shelf.

Hang inexpensive framed artwork or mirrors to help give your room a new look, but make sure the frames work with your existing decor. Use neutral color frames such as black, silver, white or even wood tone. Add shelves for another quick decorating spruce-up. Collections are perfect for displaying on a wall shelf, but try to stay away from small items. Packing in too many small items will make the shelf cluttered. You can place a framed painting or pictures on the shelf or even try something minimalist like fresh flowers in simple glass bottles.
