To set the scene for romance, consider how the room is enticing in its look, its feel, its sounds and its aroma. Want to create your own romantic bedroom but don’t know where to begin? Here are 10 ideas for starters.

1. The Bed is the Main Attraction

You can’t have a romantic bedroom without an inviting bed. Sheets with a high thread count -- ideally above 180 – are much softer, enticing you to curl up under them.

2. Concentrate on Color

Pick a bedding set based on your favorite colors. You may want to take a more ambitious approach to the room’s hues. Painting your own room is pretty easy, but it can make a room look dramatically different. Less time-consuming options abound, too. Put up different curtains, and add a decorative blanket to the bed.

3. Layer Upon Layer

Color and texture combine for aesthetic and tactile appeal, so pick your layers wisely. Looking for an easy way to bring velvet to the bedroom? Try a lush Vellux blanket in combination with a crisp sheet set.

4. Plush Pillows

Who wouldn't enjoy sinking into an oasis of comfort at the end of a long day? Fortunately, it's easy to create that environment in your room. A few extra pillows are a lot more inviting. Opt for layers of variously sized pillows that meet your sleeping needs. Need to give new life to an older mattress or make an extra-firm one a little softer? Try a mattress pad for more comfort and support.

5. Consider the Seasons

As the seasons come and go, your bedroom should feature small changes to keep it current. More delicate aromas complement the warm-weather months, while heartier scents, like vanilla, are nice for fall and winter. Color should be a seasonal consideration as well. Choose lighter shades of bedding for spring and summer and deeper ones for fall and winter.

6. Aromatic Mood

Personalize your romantic bedroom by choosing a few scents to feature. It’s easy to do. Just pick some strongly scented candles or use an oil diffuser to let an aroma fill the room. Flowers offer a direct path to the heart for many lovers. Inviting a floral aroma can be as easy as putting lavendar sachets in a closet. Want to bring the flowers closer to your bed? Add a lavendar solution to your washer when it’s time to clean the bedding. It’s not hard at all. First, you’ll want to create a sachet of lavendar flowers in muslin. Then, boil water – three cups. When the water boils, add the sachet. Simmer the sachet and water, covered, for 15 minutes. This infusion should then be added to the washer’s rinse cycle.

7. Lights That Set the Mood

Be sure that your ceiling light isn’t too harsh. Bedside lamps do well with bulbs lower than 40 watts or ones in non-white tones, such as pink. Of course, candles cast the ultimate romantic light. Use caution when using candles, though. If you’re getting sleepy, be sure to extinguish the flames.

8. Romantic Rhythms

Pump up the volume on your romance by incorporating music into your room’s ambience. Sometimes nearby noises can pollute a peaceful atmosphere, but hanging plush curtains can cut down on outside sound. Picking curtains of intriguing textures and colors adds to the attractiveness, too. You don’t want anything to take away from the mood, so get rid of any distractions. Bedroom TVs are a big don’t.

9. Making Your Room Yours

Personal touches like photos and prints, fresh flowers, and plush robes can all be nice additions. Choose whatever additional decorations mean the most to you.

10. Partner Project

A project like this can give you new insights into what your partner equates with romance. Take advantage of the learning opportunity!
